Park Talk Hosted By Friends of Trinity Bellwoods - Meet The People and Projects

Friends of Trinity Bellwoods Park TalkOn March 1, 2012, Park People met with local Trinity Bellwoods residents and other park supporters to learn about the people and projects of the Friends of Trinity Bellwoods Park.  For the second half of the meeting, Dave Harvey led a discussion about Park People's new Guidebook for Park Groups. Chairperson Leigh Nunan began the meeting by explaining that, as the only person on the Steering Committee under 30, she handles Facebook and Twitter for the group. Leigh is also developing a proposal for an arts event for artists who are currently installing pieces in the park incognito.

Trinity Bellwoods GreenhouseAnna Hill is a long-time member of the Friends of Trinity Bellwoods Steering Committee and she is the new Community Outreach Coordinator for Park People. Anna gave a brief history of the Trinity Bellwoods Greenhouse and explained how five community groups and thirty local gardeners have organized to work collaboratively in the greenhouse. Michaelle McLean is the Adopt-A-Tree Coordinator for Friends of Trinity Bellwoods and she manages a database about park trees that was created in conjunction with the University of Toronto and Neighbourwoods.  Over 60 local residents participate in Adopt-a-tree by watering new trees weekly for three years after initial planting. 

Trinity Bellwoods Farmer's MarketAnother long-time member of the Friends, Carolyn Wong, is the group’s treasurer and she is the manager of the weekly farmer's market, now in its sixth season. Carolyn also receives the notifications of special events permit applications and film shoots in the park. She uses this
information to approach location managers to request donations.  After an update on new business, Dave Harvey asked for suggestions for Park People’s new Guidebook for Park Groups
Ideas included a Q & A Section with basic information for new and existing park groups and a Park Projects Section with stories about how park groups have realized specific initiatives such as a new playground, community garden, or farmers’ market.
